Divorce & Singleness

Question

Within the Divorce section, you talk a lot about the innocent victim's ability to re-marry. What if they're a Christian? Doesn't Jesus' forgiveness wipe away our sin, even the sin of an unbiblical divorce? Is that guilty party under the bondage of a life of singleness forever?

Answer

The divorce section is written primarily for the benefit of those who have had, or need to have a divorce. So many of these suffer immense guilt and fear due to the church's false teaching on divorce and re-marriage. But there is also the need to speak to the case of the guilty party, so we appreciate the question. In the case of the innocent party, the right to remarry is automatic, for no sin is involved. In the case of the guilty party, the sin of divorce, and its consequences may be forgiven, contingent upon repentance. If the guilty party repents of his covenant breaking, he is certainly free to re-marry.
Any sin is forgivable if the sinner will repent. "Repentance" is a change of heart, that produces a change in behavior.

So repentance means two things:
Confessing one's sin to God and asking for forgiveness.
Determining to avoid committing that sin again.

Thus one who repents of breaking marriage covenant, realizes and confesses it to be sin, seeks forgiveness, and then determines not to break marriage covenant again.
